In January 1990, the Board of Trustees began to seriously investigate the purchase and renovation of the old post office building. Mr. M.W. Nash kicked off the fundraising campaign by generously donating $100,000 for the purchase of the building. The fundraising committee diligently pursued the remaining $421,138 needed to restore the building and make it suitable for a museum. Thanks to generous Matagorda County citizens, businesses, civic organizations, and foundations the museum's goal was achieved.
The post office was built in 1917-1918 in the neoclassic and Beaux Arts classic architecture styles. In 1958, the south wing was added and several minor interior changes were made. Sydney Gilzow, project manager, designed and implemented the building's renovation and reuse plans. He skillfully incorporated existing features into the project so a sense of the old post office would remain forever. The vestiges of the postal lookout system are an example of this. The Museum is lucky to own the original construction blueprints of the post office.
